THIA: Soaring Loonie Expected To Boost Snowbird Travel
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 4, 2007) - A record snowbird exodus to the United States this fall and winter is being anticipated by Canada's travel health insurers on the continuing strength of the loonie, which has rebounded in value against the U.S. dollar by 50 percent in the last five years. (One Canadian dollar bought 62 U.S. cents in January 2002. It now buys close to 94 U.S. cents). According to the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada, which represents travel insurers and their allied services, Canadians travelling to the United States have regained much of their purchasing power, hitting levels they haven't seen for 30 years. "This is especially advantageous for snowbirds, who spend between one and six months in the sunbelt states purchasing groceries, clothing, gasoline, accommodation and recreational services, as well as paying taxes and in many cases buying retirement properties," said Juliann Martyniuk, president of THIA.

Thailand isn't known solely for its beaches and brothels – the country is quickly becoming the top destination for face lifts, knee replacement surgeries and organ transplants. And as health care costs – aided by the escalating costs of malpractice insurance, as well as rising insurance premium rates – skyrocket, more people are booking passages to India, Singapore and other points in Southeast Asia, searching for quality care at better prices. “I'm a practicing medical tourist," said Regis University Professor Mark Durand. “I go to Bangkok, Thailand, for a couple of reasons. The first is price. The second is the quality of health care." The prices for health care overseas are about one-tenth those in the United States, and patients from America and Europe are traveling for elective surgeries, cosmetic surgeries and dental surgeries.

Consumers should 'get insurance for cats and dogs'
Claire Moyles, pet insurance manager, said: "Many pet owners may like to treat their animals with food and snacks intended for human consumption, but they must be aware of the detrimental effect this can have on their pet's health.""Overfed, obese animals often suffer from diabetes, osteoarthritis and other conditions that require a long-term course of veterinary treatment and their life expectancy can also be reduced dramatically," she added. As a result, the firm suggested that taking out a sufficient insurance policy could help pet owners meet the cost of vet bills and medication.Earlier this year, Churchill Insurance advised that those tourists wishing to take their animal away with them on holiday should make sure their pet has ample cover, in addition to getting an adequate travel insurance policy for themselves.© Adfero Ltd .
