Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, recently polled 7,854 of its policyholders and Web site visitors to find out how people care for their pets while they are on vacation. Nearly a quarter of those polled (23.7 percent) take their pets with them when they travel. In addition, 36.4 percent have a friend or relative watch their pet, 20.3 percent board their pet in a kennel/hotel, 15.1 percent hire a pet-sitter, and 4.4 percent leave their pet at home alone. "For many pet owners, traveling with their pet is an appealing option," said Dr. Carol McConnell, director of veterinary education for VPI. Norwich Union building insurance covers wet pets
In good news for pet owners whose home is at risk from floods, Norwich Union building insurance will cover the temporary relocation of the animal, should the worst happen.
A spokesperson from Norwich Union said that people who have buildings insurance should be able to claim the costs of putting their pet in a kennel or a cattery if the animal is at risk.
"We will pay, as part of the alternative accommodation, under a claim for flood, for reasonable accommodation expenses for you and/or your pet," he said.
However, the spokesperson pointed out that actual injuries would not be covered by building insurance.
"If your pet is injured, that is what pet insurance is there for," he said.
Earlier this week, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance claimed that 34 per cent of the UK's combined cat and dog population are suffering from obesity.

New research from Sainsbury's Bank indicates that obesity is a serious problem affecting over a third (34%) of the UK's combined cat and dog population. Sainsbury's Pet Insurance estimates that around 2.72 million dogs and 2.87 million cats are suffering from obesity.
According to a research study carried out by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, some 81% of animal physiotherapists think obesity is the number one health danger for dogs. Almost two-thirds of the physiotherapists believe the main causes of the rise in canine obesity are lack of exercise and overfeeding.
