UK small caps close lower; Goldstone suffers after BHP exits project

LONDON, Jul. 10, 2007 (AFX International Focus) -- UK small caps were lower at the close, though they did not suffer as much as the wider market, with Goldstone Resources slumping in reaction to a statement late yesterday that mining giant BHP Billiton (NYSE:BHP) would not be proceeding with a project in which the company has an interest. At the close, the FTSE Small Cap index was 22.4 points, or 0.55 pct, down at 4,039.0, compared with a session low of 4,036.1. Earlier, the index had edged into positive territory, reaching 4,061.7. The FTSE 100 was 81.8 adrift at 6,630.9. Goldstone Resources Ltd was 0.325 pence lower at 1.575 pence after its announcement late yesterday that BHP Billiton has exited an option agreement over bauxite interests in Guyana and that no payments are due to the company from BHP Billiton.

The Progressive Corporation Shareholders Meeting - Final

GLENN RENWICK, PRESIDENT AND CEO, PROGRESSIVE: Again, thank you for coming. This is a good opportunity for us to tell you what we have been up to. This year, we have structured our thinking around six operational questions and we think those are representative of the kind of questions that are on your mind, so we have structured the session by asking ourselves the question. That way we can give a little bit more thought ahead of time, a little bit more color and obviously all of the material today is in your notebooks. We recognize to try and get some of the detail on there doesn't always project well on the screen, so we really want the handout to be a little bit more meaty, so we have done it in the way we have done it. I think you will find those quite readable. So let me take you through sort of what we are going to do this morning.

Help is available for veterans suffering war-related injuries

Military veterans who have suffered serious injuries resulting from their wartime service can obtain financial help, thanks to two congressionally legislated programs, a senior U.S. military officer said in a recent interview with online journalists.

Congress established the Traumatic Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) program in 2005 in response to the experiences of some former and current military members who found themselves financially strapped after they suffered severe injuries during the war against terrorism. Coverage applies to active-duty and reserve-component members.

"This program provides up to $100,000 per event, depending on [the type of] injury," Army Col. John Sackett, a disability compensation expert with U.S. Army Human Resources Command in Alexandria, Va., said during a recent interview.

Police officer remanded on murder charge

Adam Lowe, 26, of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, a serving City of London police officer, appeared at City of London magistrates court yesterday charged with murder. Mr Lowe is one of three men who have been charged with the killing. The others are Lloyd Moore, 26, an administrator, of Epping, and Rick Maynard, 27, a designer, of Woodford Green. Commander Patrick Rice, of the City of London police, said: "We are deeply disappointed that one of our officers has been charged in connection with this investigation. He has been suspended from duty and justice must now take its course."

Spanish healthcare system

But because the system is highly regionalised, with each region exercising its own autonomy, complications may arise.

In the story 'Don't be left counting the Costa' in Issue 833, we said permanent and semi-permanent expatriates should register with the authorities and obtain a residencia residence card which gives access to state-run healthcare. But this is not a guarantee. Below is advice based on that supplied by the British consulate in Madrid www.britishembassy.gov.uk/Files/KFile/living-spain.pdf. Their highlighted points are in bold.

VISITORS

UK residents on "short-term" visits to Spain are covered for emergency treatment if they produce the European Health Insurance Card (Ehic). Dental care, other than emergencies, are not covered.

Private hospitals will not accept Ehic and may demand cash in advance.
