Medical insurance brokers urged to think globally

Intermediaries who ignore the growing demand for private medical insurance (PMI) policies to include an international dimension could lose business to their competitors, Allianz Worldwide Care's chief executive has warned.

Ron Buchan said the traditional distinction between domestic and international PMI is blurring because health cover is related to people rather than places, treatment is increasingly obtained internationally and people who travel frequently for business know where to get the best treatment.

Speaking at the Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries' (AMII) annual conference, Buchan said: "Multinational companies don't see the distinction between countries and health insurance policies that we see. Higher-end employees want a broader range of cover and this is not affected by the fact that they are French or American."

He warned that intermediaries who ignore the trend "could be caught by surprise" because non-involvement will open the door to competitors.

Healthbase Prescribes Medical Tourism Ensuring Good Healthcare for ...

(openPR) - Michael Moore's latest movie, SiCKO, makes clear the present healthcare scene in America. In such a situation, international healthcare providers help Americans by providing them the healthcare they need at affordable costs. Medical tourism, as the practice is called, benefits not only uninsured and underinsured Americans but insured Americans as well. Healthbase offers help to patients going overseas for surgery by saving them money and making accessible services not covered by their insurer. Healthbase, a Boston-based medical tourism facilitator, provides services to patients at all levels of health insurance coverage – uninsured, underinsured and insured. The main force driving uninsured and underinsured Americans to seek healthcare overseas is the low cost for world class services.

No more delays on Family Health Insurance, Dominican Government says

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Government said yesterday it'll not allow any sector involved in the Social Security System to postpone the Family Health Insurance's (SFS) contributing regime.

Vice president Rafael Alburquerque, head of the SFS Follow-up Commission, said that any sector which doesn't want to enter under the proposed conditions will simply not enter the system.

Interviewed in the offices of the National Social Security Council (CNSS), where he headed a meeting with that agency's members, Alburquerque said discrimination against health services providers (clinics) or doctors will not be allowed.

The vice president's statement supports the position of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), the National Private Clinics Association (Andeclip) and the private laboratories, which denounced that the Universal ARS is allegedly canceling contracts with those entities and doctors, to pass them on to their figureheads, which would be installing primary attention centers.

New health insurance scheme in the offing

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is working on a health insurance scheme for families below the poverty line (BPL) with a special focus on the public health system.

Sources in the Local Administration and Finance Departments told The Hindu that instead of joining hands with the private sector, the Government is planning to rope in public sector companies and launch the scheme through Government hospitals and public health centres (PHCs). The previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government's attempt to implement the scheme in association with a private insurance company turned out to be a non-starter since it was against the provisions of the Universal Health Insurance Scheme (UHIS).

The UHIS, which is specifically designed for BPL families with a Central Government subsidy, can be implemented only through public sector insurance companies.
